AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—(Jago Sikh Media Beuro) SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar has strongly condemned the portraying of the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh Ji as a descendant of Hindu deity Parsu Ram. On invitation cards for a function to be held at Pragati Maidan (New Delhi) in commemoration of 350 birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the organizers portrayed Guru Gobind Singh Ji as descendant of Hindu deity Parsu Ram and had also printed photo of Swami Vivekanand parallel to Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Interacting with media on November 25, Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar said that the SGPC won’t tolerate any activity trying to denigrate the Sikh dignity. He added that any attack on Sikh tenets would be taken seriously by the SGPC to set an example for future so that no one could dare to perform such act again.
He added that religious personalities of all religions were respectable but they ought to take care of the feelings of Sikhs while marking any event of other religions.
At the directions of the Supreme Court to present a draft of guidelines to tackle issue of jokes on Sikhs, the SGPC and the Delhi equivalent, DSGMC have suggested the Apex Court to brought the issue under the ambit of ‘ragging’, which is banned.
The punishment for this transgression is adequate to control racial slur in educational institutions and work places across the Indian sub-continent.
The suggestions further reads as if any act of ragging, bullying, ridiculing and mocking on account of religion, race, caste, ethnicity and physical appearance should be dealt with by punishments ranging from warnings, suspension, withholding of scholarships & other benefits and examination results beside expulsion. The suggestion however urges the Court to not to include the students of class 8 or below.
The SGPC has also suggested cancellation of affiliation of educational institutions if they fail to control the racial slur in their institutes.
The Supreme Court had earlier said that it was willing to control jokes on Sikhs but was not finding any adequate way to implement it. The Apex Court had asked SGPC and DSGMC to come with a draft of guidelines to tackle with the issue.
Interestingly, Sh. Deepak Kumar ji sent a written apology due to his comparisons of Guru Gobind Singh ji with a Hindu deity. The organizers from his event apologized to the whole Sikh community for hurting their religious sentiments unintentionally.
